Vue Pack Recycling: Does It Really Work?

One of the things that Keurig advertises is that the Vue Packs are partially recyclable whereas the K-Cups really aren’t. Technically you can only recycle something that has the plastic code stamped into the container. You’ve probably seen many plastic containers that have any number ranging from 1 through 6 stamped on them. That specifies what kind of plastic the container is made of and whether and how it can be recycled.

The K-Cups don’t have that stamp so technically you can’t recycle them. We assume that if you put them into your plastic recycling bin, they might still be recycled (at least in some areas). Keurig promises that the Vue packs actually can be recycled and has the plastic container stamped as type no. 5 plastic. You can’t recycle the whole Vue pack but you can recycle the main plastic container.

If you have a garden and you compost then you should also be able to compost the used coffee grinds which would then only leave the foil that closes the grinds into the container to be ending up in the trash. However, it’s not that easy. Even though Keurig uses a plastic now that is marked and that technically can be recycled, there’s many communities and cities that do not recycle type 5 plastics. We are located in the Boston area and within 25 or so miles around Boston there’s two town or community that would recycle type 5 plastics. Sending The Used Vue Packs

An alternative is to recycle you Vue packs by sending them in. The whole process is described at http://www.preserveproducts.com/gimme5/vuerecycling. While you will get a discount on future Vue purchases when you send your used Vue packs in, you still will have to pay for shipping. In our opinion that’s probably the easiest way right now to recycle your Vue packs.

Are Vue Packs Really Recyclable?

In our opinion we feel like Keurig is pushing the whole recycling really only for marketing purposes. We wonder why Keurig and Green Mountain Coffee didn’t opt for a type of plastic that can easily be recycled and thus would have created a truly recyclable container. It seems that Keurig simply can state now that you can recycle your Vue packs, but unfortunately nobody really can.

We think that what is needed is a reusable Vue pack container similar to the My K-Cup which produces no waste except for the used coffee grinds. If you’re really environmentally conscious then you probably will want to wait until such a system is available. Or, you can go and use the used Vue packs to grow seeds, use them as paint containers for art projects, etc.

The size of the water tank in combination to the wide range of brewing choices makes the V700 an ideal beverage station for when you have friends and family over.

You can brew a cup of coffee with the Vue V700 within 30 seconds to 1 minute, depending on strength and size settings. This is the usual speed of most single cup coffee makers today and results in around 7 or 8 cups of coffee within a 10 minute time span. The Vue V700 additionally allows to select whether you want to brew strong. Where the old K Cup based brewers only brewed one specific way, the V700 allows to brew stronger coffee. This is done through the ‘Strong’ brew setting which adjusts the water pressure, airflow and timing of the brew cycle resulting in a stronger brewed beverage. The Keurig Vue V700 brews stronger coffee through a pulsing brew cycle which needs more time but results in a richer taste of the beverage.

Lastly, the V700 has pre-set brew cycles you can choose from. These allow you to brew specialty beverages easily. The Vue V700 uses a two step brewing process to allow to brew specialty drinks like lattes or cappuccinos. The first cycle is with a ‘frother’ or milk Vue cup which is then followed by a second cup which is the coffee Vue cup. This is the same process that has been used with the Tassimo and Nescafe specialty drinks. However, for a Keurig product is new. The result is that you get delicious, rich lattes and cappuccinos that taste like you’d expect them to taste in a coffee bar.

Conclusion

We really liked the Keurig Vue V700. It’s in our opinion a huge improvement over the regular Keurig K Cup brewers and is right up there with the Tassimo brewers. The over-sized water tank is great and the personalization options are simply incredible. The coffee tastes fantastic and in our opinion is much better than what we got before with the K Cups. This single cup coffee maker is a great buy for a family that likes to drink hot beverages fresh and tasty.

The only downside we see at this time is that there’s not that many varieties and flavors around. However, in our opinion this will change in the short term so it won’t be an issue anymore. Even Starbucks already announced that they will provide their coffee beverages for the Keurig Vue system.
